History

The Rock Mines started a little over 50 years ago. Mountain men were returning from World War II and going back to the mines. They were looking for their "Pot of Gold" in a white substance called Feldspar. Colors meant nothing to these bold mountaineers, they were only after the big pegmatites of Feldspar.

Seven of the Big Eight Mines lay parallel to the rolling South Toe River. Big Strong men would go to the mines in the dark morning to work, up to 16 hours a day for a whole dollar and fifty cents. Emeralds and Aquamarine were thrown in the dump, or taken home for children to play with. They were pretty, but nothing to keep.

The men were heroes among their kinfolk, because of their dedication to their families and their mines. So when you go out on a Mine Tour, think about these strong men who mined a fortune in that white powdery stuff called feldspar, but took home only a modest paycheck. Good luck in finding all of the pretty colored stones that they left behind for you!
